Please join Guarani Museum and SIREJ Bolivia on their Facebook pages next Monday at 4-5:30p Oregon time / 7-8:30p Bolivia 🇧🇴 time (links below) to hear from youth and supporters of the “THE GREAT MARCH FOR THE TERRITORY, IDENTITY AND CULTURE” that began Aug 25, 2021 in Bolivia.

Marchers are Indigenous Peoples of the Amazon, Oriente and Chaco which include many of our indigenous partners including Guarayos, Guaraní, and Chiquitano/Monkoxi Indigenous peoples.

Please share and thank you for your support.
—--
“Students for Indigenous Rights and Environmental Justice (SIREJ) and the Guaraní Museum, we see in our communities and territories, the invasion of agro-industrial, livestock and intercultural, which affect us with: clearing, forest fires and the destruction of the forests.
In destroyed and fragmented forests, hunting is no longer possible; our rivers run dry and there are no fish; forest fruit is increasingly scarce in indigenous territories and protected areas. On the other hand, we are all suffering from sudden environmental changes, very cold or high temperatures, torrential rains, increased hurricane force winds and, in a short time, it will be worse, with drought and then floods; for all these situations, we participate in "THE GREAT MARCH FOR THE TERRITORY, IDENTITY AND CULTURE" and the creation of the "PARLIAMENT OF NATIONS INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF THE AMAZON, EAST AND CHACO OF BOLIVIA ”.
Today we need all the support of young people like us, in solidarity of the population with children, women, older adults of the generation of the 90s of the last century who marched for "Dignity and Territory" and who are now part of "THE GREAT MARCH FOR THE TERRITORY, IDENTITY AND CULTURE "”

Thank you

VERSIÓN EN ESPAÑOL ABAJO

Hi Everyone,
I’m writing to invite you to our online GEO #NoPassportNeeded (NPN) course called Indigenous Rights and Environmental Justice of Bolivia, which is open to University of Oregon (UO) and non-University of Oregon students (undergraduate and graduate), international students, high school students and lifelong learners. Class will meet on Zoom Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11am-1pm between June 21 and July 16 (UO’s first summer session).

I will co-teach this course with Bolivian Professor Jose Martinez (Quechua), Bolivian environmental scientist Zulma Villegas, and UO ethnomusicology Professor Juan Eduardo Wolf. Students will collaborate with Bolivian indigenous peoples and learn how environmental justice, social justice, and indigenous, human and cultural rights are intertwined. In addition to learning through lectures, guest presentations from indigenous peoples, a virtual tour to a wild animal rescue, musical performances and readings you will work on remote service-learning projects with Guarayo, Chiquitano/Monkox, Ayoreo and Guaraní indigenous peoples. Students who went to Bolivia on the study abroad version of this program in summer 2019 founded an organization called Students for Indigenous Rights and Environmental Justice (SIREJ), which has continued to work on such projects since then (be sure to check out the 4-minute video about the 2019 program, which we hope to run again in summer 2022!).

These projects, which you will work on, include:

• Raising awareness and support related to the Amazon fires (https://www.sirejbolivia.org/amazon-fires.html) and COVID-19 (https://www.sirejbolivia.org/covid-19.html) in Bolivia.
•   Developing websites (https://www.sirejbolivia.org/websites.html) in collaboration with Bolivian indigenous peoples.
•  Soliciting donations (https://www.sirejbolivia.org/overview.html) such as computers, projectors and musical instruments.
•    Identifying new markets to support indigenous women collectives selling medicinal oils (https://www.sirejbolivia.org/bolivian-cusi--copaibo-oil) and handicrafts.

Anyone can participate in the ongoing work of SIREJ at any time. Please feel free to contact SIREJ (https://www.sirejbolivia.org/contact.html) or me if you are interested.

Through this #NoPassportNeeded course, UO Global Studies students will earn 6 quarter credits approved as 400/500-level Global Studies credit, which count for the GLBL intercultural experience requirement, Block B or C. The course counts for many other majors as well. This course is open to students and community members (through the Continuing Education Program). You can find registration information here (https://geo.uoregon.edu/programs/bolivia/indigenous-rights-and-environmental-justice-of-bolivia) and apply here (https://app.smartsheet.com/b/form/7b0d559331424931bf41d2254fe894f6). The cost is the same as UO summer tuition for other courses.

Longer remote internships with Bolivian legal, human rights and environmental organizations, such as World Wildlife Fund (https://www.wwf.org.bo/), CEJIS (https://www.wwf.org.bo/), CIPCA (https://cipca.org.bo/) and DIAKONIA (https://www.diakonia.se/en/Where-we-work/Latin-America/Bolivia/) are available as well – please contact me directly about these!

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or want to learn more about this experience.

We hope to see you this summer!

The University of Oregon is located on Kalapuya Ilihi, the traditional indigenous homeland of the Kalapuya people. Following treaties between 1851 and 1855, Kalapuya people were dispossessed of their indigenous homeland by the United States government and forcibly removed to the Coast Reservation in Western Oregon. Today, descendants are citizens of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Community of Oregon and the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians of Oregon, and continue to make important contributions in their communities, at UO, and across the land we now refer to as Oregon.

We express our respect for all federally recognized Tribal Nations of Oregon. This includes the Burns Paiute Tribe, the Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians, the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon, the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians of Oregon, the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, the Coquille Indian Tribe, the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians, and the Klamath Tribes.  We also express our respect for all other displaced Indigenous peoples who call Oregon home.

Learn from Indigenous Peoples in Bolivia Online this Summer!

6/2/2020

This exciting new program begins June 22 and is open to all including college and high school students and community members!
Program Overview
Learn from the indigenous peoples of Bolivia and look at a range of lenses through which indigenous peoples and others view the environment.

The academics of this experience will focus on pressing contemporary issues in Bolivia, including self-determination and autonomy; indigenous peoples and climate justice; oil/gas/mining conflicts on indigenous territories; legal developments and challenges; natural resource management in indigenous territories (e.g. community-forestry); development encroachment (e.g. industrial farming and logging); conservation of biodiversity related to indigenous peoples’ intellectual property rights; and indigenous agroecology.

By exploring contemporary issues, you will:
  • Understand respectful ways of collaborating with indigenous peoples.
  • Understand how indigenous knowledge is related to environmental conservation.
  • Understand how environmental justice, social justice, and indigenous rights are intertwined.
  • Identify causal and dialectical relationships between economic development models, indigenous peoples, and the environment.
  • Talk and write in an informed way about these topics.
  • Have a better ability to think creatively, analytically, collaboratively, and objectively.

Academic Details
Earn 6 UO credits. The credits are approved at the University of Oregon as 400/500-level INTL credit, and count for the INTL intercultural experience requirement and towards Block B or C. CRN 42957and CRN 43615 (Grad level).
For non-UO students, credit awarded is determined by the relevant department at your university in consultation with the study abroad office. Begin an application to learn more.

Indigenous Rights and Environmental Justice of Bolivia a #NoPassportNeeded experience is adapted from this study abroad program.
